The city of Bhayandar (Suburb of Mumbai) used to perpetually get flooded every monsoon leading to immense water logging and disruption of lives of the residents of that area.
The reason for this flooding was the higher elevation of the railway tracks compared to the rest of the city, which was running through Bhayandar dividing the same into East and West Bhainder. This problem was studied and analyzed by us and the work was executed accordingly and suitable number of openings were made at two locations by Micro Tunneling to provide storm water drains as such resulting in there being no water logging thereafter.

Projects in Hand

Construction of 10M wide subway for pedestrians and light vehicles at Jessal Park (North End of Bhayander Station) at Km. 43/5A-6A below the platform and running track of sub-urban section of Mumbai Division of Western Railway.

Introduction:
The East and West of Bhaindar City is connected by only one flyover which is about 3 Kms. away from the Railway Station involving a round trip of 6 Kms. to go to West Side of the Railway Station from East. A Subway was proposed at Bhainder Station on Virar End for Light Motor Vehicle and Pedestrian crossing as construction of a flyover was not possible due to congested market area with high rise buildings.

Tender was invited by Mira Bhaindar Municipal Corporation for seven times for construction of Subway by Box-Jacking Method with no participation by any agency.

M/s RITES Limited investigated reasons for non participation & found out that the soil is very weak and normal box jacking is not possible.  As moment the box section enters the embankment the initial settlement will be very high resulting in sinking of the Box unit due to vey weak soil(N=0 to 2). The same was reconfirmed by IIT Mumbai with a fresh soil investigation.
Eighth call was called by MBMC for the construction of subway with Contractor’s Methodology. The method of Pipe Arch was proposed by M/s. Ghai Construction Limited, which was finally approved by the Western Railways.

Financial Impact:
The cost of the Subway is higher as compared to a similar subway in normal ground condition by Box Jacking Method. But the use of this technology is making the construction of the Subway possible which is been pending for the past decade.

Technology

At GCL, we work on various modern techniques like Microtunneling, Trenchless technology or Box pushing technology to mention a few to achieve the best possible result to achieve the ultimate goal with precision and timely solution. Here are some details about the technologies practised which explains their functionality.

Micro TunnelingMicro Tunneling
As the name implies, micro tunneling is a digging technique used to construct small tunnels. These small diameter tunnels make it impossible to have an operator in the machine itself.
In most microtunneling operations the pipe is inserted from the entry and pushed behind the machine. This is a process often called Pipe Jacking. As the machine advances, more tunnel liner is pushed from the entrance. Thus, the speed of the advancing machine is controlled by the speed at which the pipe is inserted into the entrance.

Trenchless Technology
This a type of subsurface construction work that requires few trenches or no continuous trenches. It is a rapidly growing sector of the construction and civil engineering industry. It can be defined as "a family of methods, materials, and equipment capable of being used for the installation of new or replacement or rehabilitation of existing underground infrastructure with minimal disruption to surface traffic, business, and other activities."
The difference between trenchless and other subsurface construction techniques depends upon the size of the passage under construction.
The method requires considering soil characteristics and the loads applied to the surface. In cases where the soil is sandy, the water table is at shallow depth, or heavy loads like that of urban traffic are expected, the depth of excavation has to be at a depth such that the pressure of the load on the surface does not affect the bore, otherwise there is danger of surface caving in.

Box Pushing TechniqueBox Pushing
Box jacking, also known as Tunnel Jacking, involves the advancement of a site cast rectangular or other shaped sections using high capacity hydraulic jacks. The structure to be installed is constructed, normally in reinforced concrete, on a launch pad at site adjacent to where it has to be installed. It is then thrust forward horizontally using advance support, open shield and jacking technology with excavation taking place from inside the box. This is frequently used where an existing road or rail track is on an embankment and space exists for the structure to be cast at the side.
The main benefit of this approach is that it is non disruptive and non-intrusive. Tunnel jacking can install the final structure in one go, it also allows the above infrastructure to remain “live” and active during the work.
